I love that this is a "clean" story for teens. So many "romance" and "love" stories for teens rely too heavily on raging hormones, and not at all on intellect. This is a smart story, full of adventure and moral lessons that are not overbearing. I enjoy reading these stories! All of them so far have been fabulous, and I can see this is an author to follow!Tags : Roots of Insight (Dusk Gate Chronicles Book 2) - Kindle edition by Breeana Puttroff. Roots of Insight Dusk Gate Chronicles Book 2 eBook Breeana Puttroff Reviews
I had picked up the first book in the series ("Seeds of Discovery") and enjoyed it. Since this was reasonably priced, I picked up this book. In this installment of the series, Quinn goes back to Eirentheos for a Royal Wedding (William's brother and heir to the throne, Simon, is getting married). We learn that there is more tension between Eirentheos and the neighboring kingdom of Philotheum... where Tolliver is now in charge of the army(we briefly met Tolliver in the previous book). After the wedding, Quinn comes back to Earth but one of the Royal Family is missing and she goes back to Eirentheos to help William search for the person who they fear is trapped in Philotheum. The last half of book concerns this rescue mission. Note that you really do need to read the first book in the series for this one to make sense.
Again, the book is well written with no obvious grammar or spelling issues. It continues the story nicely with the characters developing from the first installment. I liked how Quinn's relationship with William and Thomas is developing. I also like how we get points of view from William. We learned about a mystery in Philotheum (which I guessed in the previous book). The story wraps up nicely with no big cliffhanger... although there is a shocking ending that will need to be addressed in the next book.
I did have some problems with the story. Quinn seemed overly invested in Eirentheos for just visiting the one time (two times after the wedding). She's supposedly been friends with Abigail since they were young but seems closer now to Thomas than to Abigail. I'm tired of love triangles... it seems like very young adult story has them nowadays and they feel tired and manipulative rather than a good part of the story. I also felt like Quinn and William were so young that they wouldn't have been allowed to go on the rescue mission (especially given who they were). And rescuing the person almost seemed anti-climactic. When reading the story, I kept realizing how unbelievable it all was... however, I still kept reading it and enjoyed it. I also ended up buying the next book in the series.
This second book in The Dusk Gate Chronicles is every bit as amazing as the first. It begins with Quinn trying to adjust to being back home from her recent trip to a different world, Eirentheos. Will she and William (a classmate who also happens to be a prince from Eirentheos, and the reason she discovered another world to begin with) maintain the friendship they began, now that they're back on Earth? How is she supposed to just go about her mundane life when she was living a fairytale so recently? She's also reeling from her former childhood friend, Zander, pursuing her romantically. Our dear Quinn has a lot on her plate!
The romance develops pretty quickly between Quinn and Zander. I wouldn't call it instalove at all since they've known each other their whole lives. But Zander bothered me. He was a little possessive, a bit too intense, really early on. He doesn't get angry with Quinn, but I get the feeling that he would in the future. Or at least with a guy who he might feel threatened by.
Meanwhile, William has started ignoring Quinn completely. The anger boils over and Quinn unleashes it on him, demanding to know what his problem is. Turns out, William is severely distracted because his brother (and Quinn's dear friend), Thomas, has been missing for quite some time. Before Quinn left Eirentheos Thomas told her where he was going but she had no idea his trip would be so dangerous. Together, Quinn and William return to Eirentheos in search of Thomas.
The plot in ROOTS OF INSIGHT is a fair amount meatier than in the first book. Which is actually perfect as the first book eases you into the story without being overwhelming. There's some serious stuff coming in the future books.
Romance was pretty much non-existent in the first book, but there is some in ROI - not enough to weaken the plot, though. (Yes!) It does appear that there might be a love triangle forming in the near future... Or maybe not. I vote Quinn kicks Zander to the curb. Just saying. )
Quinn is just as awesome in book two if not even more so. She takes charge at times, but is generally her loving, thoughtful, insightful self. Quinn has a keen eye for recognizing avoidance and secrecy, and she doesn't let people get away with it for long. Love, love, love Quinn. She's my new favorite heroine!
I really enjoyed getting to know William better. He is so incredible. And he complements Quinn perfectly. *ahem* Team William!!! They have similar personalities, but also have their differences - one makes up for the other one's weaknesses, and vice versa. Match made in Heaven people.
What more can I say? I have zero complaints. You should absolutely give these books a read. More than once. ) I'm off to dive into book three now; there's no way I'm waiting to find out what happens next.
**I purchased this book, however, I also received a copy from the tour host in exchange for an honest review. No incentive was offered or accepted for a favorable review or rating.
I saw Roots of Insight and thought it sounded interesting so I bought it. I then realized it was book 2 so I went and bought book 1 (Seeds of Discovery). I fell in love with the characters. Quinn is so sweet and smart and innocent. William is smart and determined. Thomas and Linnea are charming and funny. The story flows so quickly and there is always something going on that it is hard to stop reading. I think I finished both books in just a few days. Normally, I find books about teenagers to be frustrating because they are so immature. These characters show the strong side of teens. You can tell fairly early that Quinn is different and I can't wait to find out how. She is also bold and determined. She reasons things out quickly.
I love that this is a "clean" story for teens. So many "romance" and "love" stories for teens rely too heavily on raging hormones, and not at all on intellect. This is a smart story, full of adventure and moral lessons that are not overbearing. I enjoy reading these stories! All of them so far have been fabulous, and I can see this is an author to follow!
