2012 WINNER of USA Book News' award for Best Non-Fiction eBook
Four Percent is one of the most complete histories of the Boy Scouts of America ever written – and the first to focus on the remarkable story of Eagle Scouts. Award-winning author Michael S. Malone, himself an Eagle, brings the eye of a veteran journalist to a story that for too long has been wrapped in myth and prejudice – and uncovers one of the most important, but least celebrated, movements in modern American history.
Four Percent is more than just a history of the Eagle Scout rank, but also the story of many Eagles – a President of the United States, dozens of astronauts (including Neil Armstrong), Medal of Honor recipients, Nobel prize winning scientists, authors, movie stars, titans of industry, Senators, Congressmen and Governors, civil rights leaders, and community activists – who have transformed the face of America over the last century. One of Malone’s major contributions in this book is his discovery that the community service project requirement for the Eagle rank has resulted in the great youth service initiative in history more than 100 million hours devoted to improving the nation’s communities and neighborhoods.
Filled with vivid historic anecdotes, compelling profiles, and surprising facts, Malone has brought to Four Percent the eye of a world-class writer, the insider experience of being an Eagle Scout himself, and the objectivity of a career journalist, to produce the best book ever about America’s Eagles – and perhaps even about Boy Scouting itself.

Four Percent The Story of Uncommon Youth in a Century of American Life eBook Michael S Malone
This book made me proud to be one of the few to have achieved "the PhD of Boyhood." The contributions of Scouting to this country are immeasurable in value and, in today's increasingly progressive thinking, understated and under appreciated. The book does s great job in putting the history of Scouting in the context of U.S. History in the 20th and 21st centuries. It was also interesting to read about the achievements of so many great men that were defined by their trail to Eagle. I gave it 4 stars in spite of a few confusing typos and the lengthy writing in some areas but I attributed that to the pride and excitement of the author for the topic. I know had I written my about my own time in Scouting I would have written it with the same pride and attention to detail.Product details

Four Percent The Story of Uncommon Youth in a Century of American Life eBook Michael S Malone Reviews
The values , skills and experiences boys learn in scouting prepares them for adulthood and leadership. This book has many stories of prominent men who have achieved scoutings highest honor and their achievements and contributions to society. A must read if you have a son or grandson in the scouting program.
Malone has done an excellent job capturing the extraordinary value the Eagle Scout has made on American culture. Eagle Scout is the gold standard in youth achievement. No other youth development program has produced so many good citizens for our nation and Michael Malone has done a masterful job of delineating that picture. I have purchased and given away more than 25 copies so far.
An excellent book on the history of the Eagle Scout award and the extraordinary boys who as early earners of the rank set the standard for all future Eagle Scouts. The prose is very engaging and expertly researched - sure to maintain the interest of any reader, not just those who are involved in Boy Scouts.
I always enjoy a book on a topic I know allot about, but this book still had allot of history I did not know. After over twenty years in Scouting, being an Eagle Scout, having signed many Eagle Applications as a Scoutmaster for over eleven years, I thought I understood what the role of an Eagle Scout is. This is not just another book about famous Eagle Scouts, this book goes further. Mike Malone went further to enhanced my understanding why I and my other fellow Eagle Scouts are continuing to help others and how that advancement process shapes our thinking towards servant leadership.
This book simultaneously amazed and inspired me. I've told many fellow Scout leaders about the accomplishments detailed in this book and each was hearing them for the first time. I recommend this book to any Scout or parent that wishes to understand the impact of Scouting on America and its boys. I'll refer to this book often in the future.
I bought this book because I myself am an Eagle Scout, as of 2012. One of our County Commissioner believes that the scouts are an amazing program, he attends most Eagle Scout ceremonies in the county, where he gets the boy and any other Eagle Scout to sign it with their autograph data variable there troop and where it was located. I loved his idea so much I started doing it myself. I've yet to read the book however was told by him that it was very good.
When I ordered Four Percent I thought I was going to read a book about things done by Eagle Scouts, what I got was one of the best histories of Scouting that I have ever read...and I have read many. I long the Scouting program and do my best to read all I can about it. Four Percent not only tells you of the history of the BSA but abut the lives of the Scouts that made that history. Excellent book and one every Scout should read. I will be giving it to my whole troop.
