Descendant Starling Trilogy Lesley Livingston Books
" The Descendant" is the second book in Lesley Livingston's Starling Saga that adds the colour and power of Egyptian and Nordic mythology into a modern day adventure and romance. The story opens as Mason Starling suddenly finds herself transported from the mortal world into Asgard after Hell's Gate, the bridge spanning New York's East River, is destroyed,. According to the tall, beautiful woman cloaked in darkness who not only claims to be the Queen of Hel but Mason's mother, the only way back home is by finding the Spear of Odin. What Mason doesn't know is that by using the spear, Ragnorak, the end of the world, will be unleashed. As Mason struggles to find her way back to the mortal realm, Fennrys Wolf who was injured in a fight to save the girl he loves will do anything to cross the boundary to the Underworld to save her. Knowing the power and prophecy of the spear Fenn with the help of his friend Rafe, an Egyptian god set out on a quest to save Mason and avert the destruction of the mortal world.
In another plot line Heather Palmerston, Mason's friend who was also kidnapped by a demented Rory Starling not only tries to return to the safety of Gosforth, to get over her unrequited love for Calum Aristarchus, but is also instrumental in trying to save the life of Rothgar Starling, the eldest of the Starling siblings.
This plot is action-packed and electrifying as it moves between the mortal and immortal realms. The characters bring cohesion to the plots which will intersect at the end and make unbelievable events seem probable. Mason is strong, determined and unstoppable in trying to find her way back to Fenn. Likewise Fennrys Wolfe is resolute and relentless in his mission as he discovers the depth of his love for Mason. Heather Palmerston is brave and resolute as she struggles to make sense of the unexplainable events in her life. Add to these three, the Egyptian god Rafe who seems altruistic in his desire to help Fenn, a calculating semi-god Calum who has suddenly discovered new powers, and a notorious student Gwen Littlefield with her bright purple hair and precognitive ability. The antagonists in the story are also unforgettable; Mason's deranged brother Rory, their egocentric father Gunnar Starling and the power-hungry, unstable Daria Aristarchus.
The story is filled with unexpected twists and turns that will keep the reader enthralled and guessing right to the end. I enjoyed the sequel and look forward to reading the next book in the trilogy

Descendant Starling Trilogy Lesley Livingston Books Reviews
Great plot line, but the characters could be more rounded, and the way she falls for the boy is rushed, she doesn't even question his odd background. It could be made a little more realistic.
Book 2 in a series picks up right where the first book ended. A good entertaing read. I was ready to read the third book but I have to wait for the aurthur.
I should have known this book wasn't the end of the series - but I should have. Anyways I'm thrilled the storyline doesn't end and frustrated at the cliff hanger we are left with. I LOVE this author and can't wait for more!
I bought these for my own pleasure and they were a pleasure to read. My teenage granddaughter likes the series also.
This was actually one of these series for which I really wanted to read book 2, more so than the end of the Divergent series or the next Mortal Instruments. I enjoy these recent Norse referenced series, and think Ms. Livingston pulled off a nice book 2 with a great cliffhanger ending. Mason is a great female protagonist and I am eager to see how everything is set right in book 3.
Most series falter with the second installment but that is not the case here. We pick up with a quick refresher just in case you've forgotten where we were left dangling precariously from a cliff. The action starts there and does not once slow down. We get updates on everyone and are not left wondering what happened to so-and-so, which was great because the only thing worse than a cliffhanger is being left hanging for the third book. However, there is a HUGE cliffhanger at the end of this book. Even bigger I dare say, than the first book's. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll want a Fennrys Wolf of your very own. And, of course, the third book ASAP -)
The first half of the book was a little slow; basically just showing Mason traveling in the Other Realms and talking to all the wrong people. Only Fennrys really got any action, when he wasn't mooning over "the loss of his tru wuv!!" *sigh*
And I just found Heather's narratives unnecessary. For the most part, they didn't add anything to the story, and frankly they just annoyed the Hel out of me, since they only appeared when something was happening to another character I actually heated to be reading about. Same goes for Cal's narratives. Just pointless.
Other than that, the book was fairly eventful. This is definitely a book that was made to prepare the readers for a grand finale. Can't wait to see just what that finale is!!
